What Are You Writing For?
Let’s assume you have begun to write. You’ve left it until you are older, experienced in life, now retired (maybe) and eager to get words on paper (a screen). What are you writing for?
Don’t Misunderstand the Question, Please
When I say, “what are you writing for”, I don’t mean “why are you writing?”
That little word “for” can mean “what is your purpose in writing?” or it can mean “what ultimate goal do you have?”
It is a good thing to write whatever is in your head and see where it goes – there are many places your work might potentially fit.
Do you see your name in lights or do you want to write a small piece that will impact many people? Do you have a burning desire to be heard and a message to tell? Have you a growing story in your head? Have you a desire to play with words, their shapes, their sounds, their rhymes, their poetry?
Or, do you want to tell your personal story in an autobiography, someone else’s story in a biography – authorised or not? Are you aiming to have a novel published? Would you self-publish if you had to?
