The Write Ingredients: Confidence

By Shirl D

Let’s look at the dictionary definition of confidence

What is the Writer’s Confidence?

In the writing life, the confidence we need is:

  • self belief based on experience
  • trusting your instinct
  • shunning fear of failure

Where do you find Confidence?

It’s not available at the supermarket, is it? Nor can you grow it in your garden. So where do you find the confidence to believe in yourself as a writer?

I suggest you:

  • stop worrying
  • start trusting your instincts
  • practise writing as often as possible
  • ignore your inner critic

How do you use Confidence?

When I began to plan Later Writer a year ago, I decided it would be an organic form. Yes, I set up certain headings and made sure the website could easily be navigated. I also wanted to make this a place for pond dipping – dig in and see what you find.

Using confidence is like taking the L plates off your vehicle when you’ve passed your driving test. At some point you can stop thinking about how to drive and just get on with it.
