The Write Ingredients: Inspiration

By Shirl D

Let’s look at the dictionary definition of inspiration

What is Inspiration?

In the writing life, the inspiration we need can be nurtured by:

  • always, always, ALWAYS, carrying a notebook and pen so that any snippet of an idea can be recorded for the future
  • never, never, NEVER, losing that notebook – keep the pages in a storage folder system (I paste them into my A4 Writing Notebook aka “writing scrapbook”)

Where do you find Inspiration?

Just like Confidence, it’s not available on the High Street, is it? You must treat writing topics, themes, ideas and snippets with the reverence they deserve. Out of these will come your inspiration. Never be afraid to store a piece of paper, however small!

I suggest you:

  • dedicate a writing notebook NOW – a smallish one to carry about with you
  • start a filing system NOW – pasting pages into a “writing scrapbook” is better (I believe) than an elaborate A-Z cabinet. Flicking through your notes and ideas is far easier in notebooks than in filing cabinets, or hard drives
  • and again I say, practise writing as often as possible

How do you use Inspiration?

Using inspiration is like knowing where you keep your frozen foodstuffs – they are there when you need them and perfectly safe as long as you keep the freezer plugged in and the contents topped up.

Don’t go hungry for writing material!
